Historical Background And Location
J&k state is located in the north west region of India at 32.17oN to 36.58oN latitude & 73.26oE
To 80.30oE longitude. Comprising of high snow laden peaks & the beautiful valley of srinagar. The state has a total area of
2,222,36 sqkms & as per 1991 census has a population of 77.19 lakhs with 40.14 lakhs males & 37.05 lakhs females. Out of
the total population 58.79 lakhs is a rural & 18.40 lakhs urban. The density of population is 76 persons/sqkms & literacy rate
1996-97(% of population) is 59% (male 71% & female 48%)the work force per lac persons is 18.18(16.52 lakhs male &
1.66 lakhs female per lac persons)
Different climatic conditions prevail in the entire region e.g temperature (Kashmir valley), tropical &
sub tropical (Jammu region) & arid zone/cold deserts (ladakh region) Jehlum, Chenab, Raviindus, Suru & Zanvaskar
are the main rivers that flow through the state. On the account of several rivers hydral power projects have been set up to
meet the needs of general population & industry

The state has potential for vegetables, floriculture, horticulture,
tourism, fisheries, handicraft, electronics, mining, agro-based forest industry, pilgrimage & tourismship rearing & husbandry J&k state has a unique status in the country & gets special grants to promote education in the state.
Although kashmir Govt Polytechnic for Womens, Srinagar was established in the year 1960. It was only in the year 1986 that Govt Polytechnic for Womens was established. The large & medium
industries being less in the avenue of employment for
diploma holders lives only in the Govt departments of the state or inself employment
Government polytechnic for women, saida kadal, Srinagar was established in the year 1986 & was the
the first women’s polytechnic to be set up in the state special cources in electronics Engg, beauty culture, costume designing, cosmetology & dermatology & secterial practices where introduced in the polytechnic considering the employment of
women in these areas. Large women population of kashmir region is involved in handicraft industry.
There is also considerable
employment potential for women in the electrical & electronics indudtry. The nature of courses offered are in tune with the
employment opportunities for women of the state
Requisite infrastructure by way of class rooms, laboratories & other buildings for meeting the
requirements of the courses offered was created at saida kadal in srinagar. the polytechnic also set up a well stroked library
which was considered a model polytechnic library having a collection of 7000 books on its shelves. However, unfortunately, in the early 1990 the building of the polytechnic was engulfled in a devastating fire & the entire library assets where reduced
to ashes. After the fire, the polytechnic was temporarily housed in miskeen bagh & later in Parrypora, Barzullah.
A new complex was sanctioned by the state govt & hundred kanals of land was enmarked at bemina.
After functioning in private rented guest houses the polytechnic shifted to the present building in December 1995 after
Phase Ist of the construction of the polytechnic was completed. |
