The Govt. Women's Polytechnic established in the year 1986 at Saida Kadal Srinagar, was first of its kind in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The intention was to develop this Polytechnic as a full-fledged technical institution for girls in the state. Initially, four departments viz Electronics, Costume Designing, Beauty Culture, Cosmotology and Dermatology, Secretarial Practice and Office Management was started. The library was also established in the same year (1986) with the good collection of more than 7000 books (text, supplementry, reference books). The library had acheived a great name in a very short span of its establishment and was known as Model Polytechnic Library.
But this could not last longer. In the early 1990, with the onset of turmoil in the valley, the main building of the polytechnic gutted in a devastating fire. Everything was burnt to ashes, soon after the Polytechnic was temporarily shifted to Miskeen Bagh Srinagar for a very short period then to Parry-Pora, Barzulla. Just after two years, the Polytechnic was again shifted to RajBagh Srinagar where it functioned for a brief period. In December 1995, it was shifted to this new campus at Bemina, Srinagar. The main block in the new campus houses almost all the departments and the library as well. The department of Beauty Culture, cosmetology and dermatology was shifted from this polytechnic to Govt. Polytechnic for women, Jammu.
Beside, providing diploma courses this institute organizes six months short term certificate courses in various fields via Tailoring and Cutting, Computer-Literacy, Type shorthand, Transformer Fabrication under centrally-sponsored community Polytechnic scheme. |
